The old man invited his ancestral enemy for a one-to one.
They did not remember the cause of their rancor. Both of them agreed to bury the hatchet and went on to share a bottle of American Pride.
Why not a pow-wow?
That would not have yielded the desired result, said the old man.
But, there will be no witness to this treaty.
The fire is the witness. It is the most unbiased amongst the five natural elements. It consumes all without discrimination. It shall destroy those that do not honor this treaty.

Fire is an essentially part of rituals in many religions and the nondiscriminatory nature of file makes it the best witness or ‘saaksh’ besides its many other properties.
