The local club had won the annual Nehru boat race few days ago. The tourists had left. The jamboree had been good while it lasted. It brought in the much required cash.

However, the faces of the locals gathered around the cleaned and polished canoe reflected sadness. They did not consider it a real win.

Sixty-three years ago, the Indian PM had suggested the idea of an annual boat race to showcase the unique culture of this region on his first visit here.

All the rowers had been hired from the international arena of kayaking and canoeing.

  1. You wrote a very interesting story and sadly it’s true. But we are no different than other conquerors of the past. It doesn’t make it okay – I just understand the story. Good job! Nan

  2. Sad story, and also makes you think. If that boat race wasn’t a tourist attraction, would the tradition be maintained at all? Soemtimes we may have to remember that we all come from the same place, so why not have international participants?

I love arguments
