This is the last surviving painting of the billiard table before it was removed by the king’s men in lieu of unpaid taxes.
It reminds me of an interesting tale ……..
A war minister to a king of olden times secured his position by deftness of his cueing skills and his wits. He used his skills in not playing too well to win a game and not playing too badly to keep his master in good humor. Unfortunately, he knew little about war and was kicked out when the king’s army lost.
After a few months in exile the minister regained his position in court. He was given the charge of treasury for suggesting a levy on daily-earnings from billiard tables.
