A different bacon

I wanted to address this prompt differently, so did some web research and I found the story of US bill for importation of useful new animals in US—the hippo bill (H.R. 23261).  It was introduced by the Louisiana congressman Robert Broussard in 1910.

It proposed importing Hippos from Africa to Louisiana. They would provide a delicious new source of protein for a meat-hungry nation. Furthermore, the animals would gobble up the invasive water hyacinth that was killing fish and choking off waterways – a perfect ivory-tower solution to hyacinth menace.

The bill failed by one vote.

  1. Hippo steaks would sound so odd. They could probably have eaten the water plants in those days as there was no doubt less pollution. They don’t like people though and could have only been let loose in unpopulated areas. There would have probably been other problems bringing an animal from another part of the world. Good, informative story, Yarnspinnerr.
