Prompt ….
PHOTO PROMPT – © Erin Leary
I wanted to address this prompt differently, so did some web research and I found the story of US bill for importation of useful new animals in US—the hippo bill (H.R. 23261). It was introduced by the Louisiana congressman Robert Broussard in 1910.
It proposed importing Hippos from Africa to Louisiana. They would provide a delicious new source of protein for a meat-hungry nation. Furthermore, the animals would gobble up the invasive water hyacinth that was killing fish and choking off waterways – a perfect ivory-tower solution to hyacinth menace.
The bill failed by one vote.

Thanks for the prompt Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. SHALOM.
Interesting information. What the heck were they thinking? Hippos?
Plenty of meat….
Thank you for the interest.
Well, there is that.
Interesting news. I guess someone didn’t like hippo meat.
🙂
Thank you.
just one vote? darn!
Right.
Thank you.
Goodness, that was close. Great take, and I learned something new.
Thank you.
So close!
yes.
Thank you.
Very interesting news. Different take on the prompy. Nice.
Thank you.
At least they were trying to think outside the box. An interesting piece, and I love the ‘hyacinth menace’. Very funny.
Thank you.
Hippo steaks would sound so odd. They could probably have eaten the water plants in those days as there was no doubt less pollution. They don’t like people though and could have only been let loose in unpopulated areas. There would have probably been other problems bringing an animal from another part of the world. Good, informative story, Yarnspinnerr.
Introducing a species in a new ecosystem is obviously a bad idea.
Thank You.
