The un-fenced highways of Southeast Asia are equal opportunity thoroughfares for animal as well as human traffic. Highly adorned and brightly painted trucks are the undisputed kings of the road with unassailable right to first passage. They have caused many a frenzied stampede of cow / buffalo herds and resulted in unnecessary fatality.
Art is the human expression of creativity. Truck painting is a popular form of indigenous art in Pakistan and other South Asian countries, featuring floral patterns and poetic calligraphy. Pakistani truck art is about cultural history, tradition, storytelling, passion, and sometimes playful one upmanship. As such, every little adornment on the trucks has a special significance. It is a thriving ancillary of the haulage industry and provides employment to millions.
An especially creative artist painted a few cows and buffaloes for a trucker turned cow-herd. They caused havoc on their way home. Several truckers went off the road thinking them to be visitations by spirits for their past misdeeds.
