Of cows

Prompt  ….

This week’s photo prompt is provided by MajesticGoldenRose. Thank you.

This is a prompt that provokes one to write the secret history of world. The social, cultural and political evolution of this world is directly related to animal husbandry and agriculture. Icons who have changed the course of human history have been cattle herders, Krishna – the cow-herd, Jesus – the sheep-herd, Mohammed – the camel-herd and Moses – the sheep-herd to name a few. In view of the word restriction, I shall only talk about cows in Hindu culture.

The ancient Hindu scriptures (Vedas) did not strictly forbid beef-eating but later developments relating to peaceful coexistence coupled with improved agriculture promoted a vegetarian culture and iconic worship of the cow that has unfortunately become a vote catching gimmick today.

Amazingly, no scientifically valid proof has been put forward regarding why the cow is so holy and why beef /animal-flesh is a strict NO-NO for orthodox Hindus.

The real reason behind such advice is that Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (Mad-Cow-Disease) and its human version occurred thousands of years (during Vedic period) before revisiting us in 1980s

Words <175

Thank you Priceless Joy
