Seshachalem forest in South India is the world’s primary source of red sandalwood. It is a lucrative commodity that sells for a fortune in China and Japan. In spite of regular raids and encounters – smuggling and illegal trade of sandalwood continues to flourish in this area.
Further south, Veerappan in his 40 years of terror killed over 2000 elephants in exchange of over 88,000 pounds of ivory and 10,000 tons of sandalwood. This is besides $22m in blood money from kidnapping and allied activities. Unfortunately even after 15 years of his death the smuggling and illegal cutting of sandalwood trees has not stopped.
The outskirts of the adjoining city has developed in to a rich suburb where it is not unusual to see cart loads of sandalwood parked in front of the houses of rich waiting to be towed to their final destination.
