Of Buttons

Queen Victoria wore only black after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. She used black jet-buttons on her somber black outfits. Her subjects imitated her with black glass-buttons.
The women rebelled against such staid fashion soon. Jackets, vests and boots with porcelain-buttons in more adventurous colors were adopted. Unmarried girls began gathering buttons to make “charm-strings”. Once a girl collected 999 buttons, her future husband would materialize with the 1000th button.

Prompt  ….

Young Jill had collected more than 850 buttons when she reached Briare. She visited all the tourist-sites including the famous aqueduct. Finally she went to the waste-dump of the button factory and found many buttons. As she picked up another button – Jack tumbled down the 20 ft dump and presented her with another – finally she had found her love.
