The Sunday Yarn ~ The Pewter Piece

Welcome back Al.

Prompt ~

Pewter dragon ornament

*

Quirky statues attracted Dom just like jiggery attracted bees. There was almost a supernatural attraction between the two. Hence it was no wonder that Dom found the pewter piece in a shabby studio downtown.
The sculptor’s eyes twinkled as he smelled a sale – this is a solitary piece for the connoisseur. I used the mold only for this piece here.
D – Well what is it?
S – It is a dragon teaching its son.
D – What type of dragon is this?
S – A dragon is a dragon … what do you mean by type?
D – Wyvern, ddraig-goch, smok, loong, nag, gyo; WHAT ?
S – It is just a dragon!
D – What about the little object?
S – Dragon’s son.
D – Dragons don’t have sons; they have eggs!
S – Well you are such a know-all; tell me what is it?
D – It is an owl!
S – Why should a dragon swoop on an owl; it is just a little morsel?
D – The owl is rebuking him.
S – Why?
D – To mend it’s ways … fire and fury only results in extinction.
S – How do you know?
D – I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.

The Sunday Yarn ~ A state of grace

Dom had been on interstellar travel and was showing me his tour photographs. I was surprised to find the registration plate photograph in this lot and moved on to the next – this one showed a car museum of sorts.

These do not belong here, Dom.

No, these too are from a planet at the other end of our galaxy.

Looks like another planet having a romance with cars. It must be quite like earth.

No. They consider the car as the work of devil and root of all problems on earth.

Really …….

They have organic-sapiens government that follows the principle that humans need to develop the immense potential that is vested in their bodies and must live without any assistance from material technology.

I am sure they are still in the dark ages.

No. In fact they are actually much ahead of us. They have different museums dedicated to evil technologies from the sick planets in the cosmos. They are live warnings for their citizens.

But how did they collect these if they shun technology?

Psychic-telekinesis and teleportation forms the core of school education there and it leads to a state of graceful development of the society.

The Sunday Yarn ~ Brigadier’s Search

Prompt ~

*

The Brigadier was looking for a wooden statue that could be displayed in his front portico. The Baron accompanied him, though he had little interest in such matters; as he had nothing worthwhile to engage him.

In one of the galleries, the art dealer asked them to accompany him to the basement. It was full of antique items – furniture, clocks, coins, stamps, statues, etc.

I have a couple that suits your need.

The two Bs looked them over. Finally the Brigadier spoke – These are damaged pieces …. they have been emasculated.

Sir, there are only few pieces of such antiquity that have not been so damaged and they are in the museums.

Who did it and why?

Missionaries! A number of church people petitioned the government against indecent carved figures in nineteenth century, Sir.

The Baron who had been surprisingly silent said – a fig leaf would have sufficed if these had been carved out of White Ash-wood.

The man from 2098 watched the waterfall along with his ancestors. He had made the backward journey in time to prove history wrong. He was researching the third world-war that had decimated 99% of the world population. The visitor had never believed that water was the cause for 3rd world war.

He had assiduously documented his findings – wastage, industrial usage, poor resource management, pollution sources and the clandestine water trade ……. till he reached 2015.

His findings indicated that the history was in fact true. If he reported his findings honestly, he would lose his hard earned reputation as an expert. No spin would work in this case, He pondered on the problem and finally thought of a solution.

He used his psychic teleportation powers on the huge water body and successfully teleported it to his fellow survivors residing in a little valley in Asia. The Niagra fall vanished leaving behind a stunned group of tourists.

An aspiring leader in 3013 addressed his fellow beings, “We have just a thousand years of history and it began after the waters from great flood receded, rest is just myth. “

The Sunday Yarn ~ Antilla

The land-baron saw the unwieldy building each day and invariably muttered what a waste. It was called Antilla but the land-baron called it Anthillaa.

The owner was strong and powerful and that frustrated the land-baron as he had set his heart on building a town ship in the island that housed the solitary Anthillaa.

One day the owner’s brother came to the door. The owner invited him in; gave him a patient hearing and then turned down his request,

A few days later a beggar woman knocked at the doors asking for alms and was turned out by the guards. She came back frequently and was refused each time. Then she sent her sons – famine, war and pestilence to the owner. They threatened the owner with their powers and the owner fled the Antilla.

The land-baron got his wish and he built a smart city in the island with many Anthillaas.

At last the brother was richer and more powerful than the owner of the Antilla.

They gathered for a brainstorming meeting below the ‘share an idea’ sign.
The expectation to be creative and deliver amazing ideas weighed heavily upon them. The insecurity of actually sharing their ideas ……….. What if they get rejected? What if people think the ideas are tacky? What if they think I am a fraud?

As regional leaders we have a responsibility to help our brothers. As leaders we have a responsibility to help them. Without creating a sense of security we shall never get them to get out and vote. But how do we create such an atmosphere?

They must feel that their lifestyle has been upgraded – or they shall not vote for us at the coming elections.

The infighting was apparent in their attitudes. There were meetings within the meeting and nobody really concentrated on the problem at hand. They were more interested in the bits of roasted beef tossed at them.

The Sunday Yarn ~ Chimera

Prompt ~

Waves engulfing a lighthouse

*

He felt like a hunted beast who has found a retreat. The bushed man finally convinced the admiral that he could keep the lighthouse. He did not know that the officer-incharge was hard pressed to find a keeper and there were no other candidates.

The last keeper unable to bear the hermit like life and the tough duties had quit. During the day he gave signals by waving flags of different colors to indicate the rise and fall of mercury in the weather-gauge; and at sunset – he had to light the lanterns at the top of the tower after climbing more than four hundred unusually high-steps. It reminded him of the attic his wife escaped to after dinner.

Looking down from the balcony of the tower at the sea, the new keeper was reminded of his past travails – the winds were his enemy. As soon as he settled down and lighted his fire, the wind tore out the roots of his abode; whirled away the fire, and pushed him on to newer destinations.

Suddenly, he noticed the turbulence in the sea below him and the darkening horizon. The evil winds had found him once again.

The Sunday Yarn ~ Two Queens

Prompt ~

Statue of Boudicca (Boadicea) in London, UK

*

She killed everyone she found when she reached Londinium. It is speculated that she ended her life by taking poison.

Her spirit wandered in the land of dead for nearly 1800 years for she refused to be born a commoner or bear injustice silently.
*******

The wounded Rani fought valiantly (with her infant son tied to her back) and managed to get through the British army. However, she got stuck at a drain. Her untrained horse failed her and the numerous British soldiers attacked the lone Rani from all sides.

Rani Jhansi1Rani Jhansi Statue in Ahmedabad.

Boadicea was finally reborn as Queen of Jhansi to fight injustice, ironically with another generation of people from the same Londinium.

The Sunday Yarn ~ Kankal

Prompt ~

Posed skeleton in a shed

*

John, please mark the attachments of the big neck muscle on Kankal … there by the window – the professor commanded.
John went to the skeleton in the corner removed the pirate-cap & marked the inner side of collarbone with some red chalk; then he marked a small bony node on the side of the skull.
Kankal (the skeleton) squealed – I shall not be able to pant if it is not attached to my breast bone.
The Professor smiled and explained the finer details of the muscle to the students preparing for the FRCS. His skills as a ventriloquist were greatly responsible for the success of his anatomy coaching.
———–
John reached the coaching-room a few hours before the scheduled time, hoping to study osteology on Kankal.
There was nobody else and he studied the fat-anatomy book and then got up to trace the course of some blood vessels and nerves on different bones. He started marking the limbs and then moved on to the ribs, spine and finally the pelvis …..
Stop the tickling, John – the professor seemed on the verge of giggling.
John looked around the room – it was empty except for the grinning Kankal.

The Sunday Yarn ~ Signed first-editions

Prompt ~

A book shop that is no longer there

*

If a collector could find a complete Gutenberg Bible of 1456, the first book ever printed he could expect to pay anywhere from $25 million to $35 million. Borm (Sr) of ‘Hooked on Books’ at one time sold many first editions and ensured the prosperity of his book shop.
Borm (Jr) was not interested in books and consequently lacked his predecessor’s talents in acquiring first editions. However, he was a sharp fellow and made up for it by illicitly scanning signed first-editions and even manufacturing some of them and selling them online.
Then he offered the oldest, printed book known as the Diamond-Sutra signed by  no less person than Gautam Buddha himself for sale on his site. It led him into a quagmire of intricate internet laws from which he was unable to extricate himself. It also sucked in the old book shop.
