This prompt reminds me of history just a few kilometers from my home……
The famous Residency of Lucknow, built in 1800 for the British Resident still bears the marks of cannon shots and the cemetery at the nearby ruined church has the graves of 2000 men, women and children who died in the First War of Indian Independence. Also known as the Sepoy (soldier) Rebellion and the Indian Mutiny it was a prolonged period of armed uprisings in different parts of India against British occupation.
Sikanderbagh palace stood in the way of the Commander-in-Chief’s planned route to relieve the besieged Residency. On the morning of 16 November 1857, whilst passing by its eastern side in a southerly direction, in a sunken lane, his force was surprised by overwhelmingly heavy fire coming from it.
Some years ago the statue of the lady sniper Uda devi was installed at Sikandar bagh crossing in Lucknow.

British soldiers lying dead under the ficus-tree, attracted the attention of the officer. He discovered that each one had been shot from above.
Wallace! Somebody is hiding on top of the tree. Can you spot him?
Wallace noticed a flash of red and fired. A sepoy dressed in a red jacket and pink trousers tumbled down. The jacket burst open and revealed that the sniper’s bosom.
Wallace burst into tears – If I had known it was a woman, I would rather have died a thousand deaths than harm her.
